I Can’t Wait

When God’s love has infiltrated a heart

and set up camp,

that heart yearns to say to all,

“I never want you to end.

I want us to go on always.

I want to see you go from good to good,

from perfection to perfection for endless lifetimes,

see you renew and transform and be added to

in unlimited generosity from our ever-living Source.

O, who shall you be?

What will you be like when He makes all new?

I can’t wait to find out.”

There are so many interesting things to notice and delight in about people.

I know, it’s also true that there is plenty to complain about, to despair of, to detest and sigh about as well. We give each other plenty of reasons for exasperation, sadness, and anger.

I know it is popular and easy and tempting to be on the “ugh, people, people-ing is so exhausting” train. I have been a passenger frequently and still get my ticket punched enough that I should be getting some kind of points for this. I am a dedicated customer of this locomotive service, do I at least get some snacks?!?

But people are also so fascinating and unique and, frankly, entertaining!

And just imagine! All the beautiful, admirable, quirky things we have seen in people (and, I hope, ourselves), all the godly things, the deeply implanted bits that make each person a one-of-a-kind reflection of God’s image - all these things will remain when everything is made new, and, I can only guess, be amplified.

If we can be in awe of the inspiring qualities of humanity now, what glory awaits our gatherings to come when each of us has shed the veils of fear and fallenness and brokenness that plague our bodies and minds now.

Wanna make a deal? Let’s both of us try to remember these things when people-ing feels too much, even if we really do need to step away. Alone time is beautiful and necessary, and I looooooove and protect mine. But we can bring our love for people with us everywhere, even when it’s time for solitude.
