This Week’s Wisteria:
I didn’t have quite the right shade of gold, but this scrubby yellow yarn was close enough with a slight shine to it.
This Week’s Book:
A Treasury of the World’s Best Loved Poems, published by Avenel Books
Quick Summary: A collection of poems loved by many in the last few centuries (plus a few Biblical psalms, always a good addition)
As I have been trying to connect more to my own writing, I also recently began adding a poetry book to my TBR book carousel. In college, I had a phase of several years when I carried a small collection of poems with me everywhere and memorized several. Don’t ask me to recite them now, they are lost somewhere in the recesses of my mind. But some of the essence of them lingers.
I think that is a unifying and lovely quality of poetry - it is often an attempt to capture or distill some sort of essence or feeling or experience.
While academic studies of poetry can be fulfilling and deepen one’s appreciation for the mechanics and creativity of poets, poetry is really for everyone. I want to celebrate that by reading and sharing more poetry here than just my own.
Moving forward, I am considering sharing individual poems that particularly move me or make me think in some way. We’ll see.
Overall:
This collection contained so many lyrically satisfying, emotionally moving, and intellectually stirring pieces, some of which I had heard many times before, others totally unfamiliar and delightfully surprising to me. May you be blessed to read some beautiful words this week.
Wishing you goodness without end,
Jess
