TBT: Jeans

Blue and faded are you shaded,

a color full of comfort.

You fit me well, as all can tell,

with very little effort.

A constant friend until the end,

you back me up when needed.

In you I felt unlike a shlemiel,

though never quite conceited.

I have grown tall and now you’re small,

you no longer fit me right.

When I wear you, you know it’s true,

we both look quite a sight!

As you I pack into a sack

to now sadly give away,

you seem to say, in your quaint way,

“from my counsel do not stray,”

You have helped me just me to be,

with every stitch and seam.

Through all my trials and each long mile,

my favorite pair of blue jeans.

Background:

A good pair of jeans is an unfortunately difficult thing to find, and when you find a pair that feels juuuuust right, you hold on to them as long as possible! I remember cutting rectangles out of old jeans to patch worn holes beside the pockets of some of my favorite jeans around the age when I wrote this.

Sadly, this temporary type of good thing can only be extended so long. It can be shared or reworked into something new, but change is necessary after a point. That change is bittersweet, but something new will become precious to us.

I hope that whatever’s old that you are having to release or whatever’s new that you are having to accept, that you savor the process. You are magnificently capable of adapting and growing, adding layer upon layer to who you are.

Wishing you goodness without end,

Jess
